Brandon’s formative years on the water found him sharing time between pillowed iceboxes on his old man’s boat or walking along the deck with a Clorox bottle tied to his belt so he would float in the wayward event he went overboard. However, over time, Brandon spurned the Clorox bottle and now chases the biggest fish and waves across the globe—no life preserver required.
His first few years out of high school were an awakening experience. He spent the first three years as a US Navy Search and Rescue Diver before running to the arms of higher education at the College of Charleston. While at the College of Charleston, Brandon became a renowned local triathlete, runner, and swimmer. He earned his BS in Exercise Physiology in 1996 and upon graduation landed his first employment as an Assistant National Teams Coach for the USA Triathlon’s Resident Team in Colorado Spring, Colorado.
Brandon, one that listens to signs and clues, decided it was time for him to pursue his life long dream and passion. Always a writer and with aspirations to make a living from it, Brandon, along with his father Captain Bruce Shuler, discussed the realities of Brandon becoming a full time writer. With no formal training, or ideas at the time, Brandon decided, or was he coerced, to join the family business, Getaway Adventures Lodge. Brandon earned his 50 Ton USCG Captains License and has become one of the most respected offshore fly-fishing guides on the Texas coast. Brandon has guided his clients, or himself, to a number of Texas Parks and Wildlife Blue Water Fly Fishing Records and a smattering of IGFA World Fly Records.
When Brandon is not on the water, he is pursuing an MA in Literature and Cultural Studies at the University of Texas Pan-American. He is also married to his beautiful wife Ashley. They are expecting there first son, Parker Reed Shuler, in November.
